Jim Hollis Executive Director
Greetings, I am the founder and executive director of Calculus Roundtable, a nonprofit that is dedicated to teaching math and science to underserved K-12 students. As an African-American, I know firsthand how education is the key to achieving success in life. Growing up, I had a deep love for math and was always curious about the world around me. My grandfather every year for Christmas gifted me the latest copy of the World Book Almanac. He would tell me, “Mind your numbers, boy. And remember no one can lie to you about math- it just is. Everything else is someone's opinion.” So, I read diligently every page.
I began to realize how math was everywhere. It is in the patterns of the stars, the shapes of the clouds, and the rhythms of music. This realization sparked a fire in me to explore the wonders of math and science. However, as I grew older and began to navigate the education system, I realized that not all students have access to the same opportunities. After 10 years as an education researcher and school reformer I decided to take action myself and create a nonprofit that would provide high-quality math and science education to underserved students who may not have access to these subjects otherwise. With the support of passionate educators and experts, we have been able to make a real impact in the lives of our students. At Calculus Roundtable, we believe that math and science education is critical for building confidence and preparing students for a new generation of jobs and interests. Our innovative programs and curriculum aim to expand the domestic job force of the future, while also empowering young people to realize their full potential. I know from life experience how much representation matters. That's why we make a conscious effort to hire a diverse team of teachers and mentors who can serve as role models for our students. We are proud to be a community that celebrates diversity and fosters a love of learning. Join us in our mission to provide high-quality math and science education to underserved students. By investing in their futures, we can build a brighter tomorrow for us all. |
